TinyURL Clone
Robust URL shortener with analytics and QR code generation. Features custom aliases and history tracking.
URL shorteners are critical infrastructure for digital marketing, analytics tracking, and content sharing — yet most are black boxes that offer zero insight into link performance. Building a URL shortening tool requires solving real distributed systems challenges: unique ID generation, redirect performance, click analytics, and QR code generation, all within a minimal footprint.
Architecture & Execution
Engineered a client-side URL shortening system using a hash-based unique ID generation algorithm combined with a browser Local Storage registry as the URL map. Implemented a lightweight analytics engine that tracks click counts and geographic data (via browser API) per shortened link. A QR code generation module was integrated to produce scannable codes on demand, with a one-click download feature. Custom alias support allows branded short links for marketing campaigns.
This project deconstructed the core algorithms behind billion-request URL shortening services — bijective functions for ID generation, hash collision avoidance, and O(1) lookup registry design. Understanding these fundamentals at a small scale is directly applicable to designing scalable URL routing and redirect systems in enterprise API gateways and CDN configurations. The analytics layer informed the design of lightweight, privacy-preserving behavioral tracking systems for clients who need data without GDPR exposure.
