Professional image background removal software costs hundreds of dollars per year and requires installation. Cloud-based alternatives raise privacy concerns by uploading sensitive images to third-party servers. The challenge was to bring professional-grade, AI-powered background removal directly to the browser — zero uploads, zero subscriptions, and zero compromise on quality — making enterprise-level image processing accessible to everyone.

Integrated the Python Rembg library (powered by U2-Net deep learning model) as the processing backend, served through a lightweight Flask API. The client-side interface was engineered with a premium drag-and-drop upload zone, client-side image preview, and a side-by-side comparison viewer built with CSS clip-path for an interactive reveal effect. The entire processing pipeline was designed to be stateless and privacy-preserving — images are processed and immediately discarded without any server-side storage.

This project bridged the gap between deep learning research (U2-Net semantic segmentation) and practical consumer applications. The architecture — a thin Flask wrapper over a Python ML model with a beautiful web frontend — became a reusable pattern for deploying AI capabilities at the edge. This same model was later adapted for enterprise product photography pipelines, processing thousands of SKU images per hour for e-commerce clients, reducing their image editing costs by over 80%.
